Dynamic Kenpo, Volume 1: Evolving Perspectives on the Art of Scientific Violence

(from Amazon)

by Jason Creel (Author)

Dynamic Kenpo, Volume 1: Evolving Perspectives on the Art of Scientific Violence

Kenpo was never meant to remain static; for decades, martial artists have focused on memorizing techniques, collecting belt ranks, and accumulating information. But information alone does not create skill—and it certainly does not prepare someone for the chaos of real violence.

Drawing on more than thirty years of training, teaching, research, and practical experience, Jason Creel explores the principles that transform Kenpo from a collection of techniques into a logical, adaptable system of self-preservation. Rather than presenting endless technique lists, this book examines the underlying concepts that allow practitioners to think, analyze, adapt, and continually refine their Kenpo into a living and functional Art.

Inside you'll explore topics including:

• Building the mindset and attitude necessary for effective self-preservation

• Developing speed, accuracy, power, timing, and intent

• Understanding body mechanics and functional movement

• Training methods that create transferable skill instead of rote memorization

• Decision-making under pressure and tactical problem solving

• Continuous refinement, critical thinking, and lifelong growth in the martial arts

• Practical drills and exercises to accelerate development

Whether you study American Kenpo, another striking art, or simply want to understand the principles behind effective martial training, Dynamic Kenpo, Volume 1 provides a framework for becoming a more capable, more thoughtful, and more adaptable martial artist.

This is not a book about collecting techniques; it is about learning how to think and grow.

Kenpo Beyond the Technique by Dale Sheptak

(from Facebook)

After many years of practicing and teaching martial arts, I finally decided to put some ideas into a small book.

Kenpo Beyond the Technique explores something I’ve been thinking about for a long time: Kenpo is not just a collection of techniques. It’s a way of understanding distance, timing, and adaptability under pressure.

The book focuses on the principles behind the system rather than step-by-step instruction.

It’s a short reflection on how I believe the art works beneath the surface.

If you happen to be interested, it’s available on Amazon.

Kenpo Beyond the Technique - Dale Sheptak

(from Amazon)

Kenpo techniques are often criticized as too complex, too scripted, or too dependent on cooperation to work in real situations. Kenpo: Beyond the Technique argues that this criticism misunderstands what Kenpo training is actually designed to do.

Rather than offering techniques as literal solutions, Kenpo uses structured movement as a training environment. Techniques function as constraints that develop perception, balance, timing, and decision making under pressure, preparing practitioners to adapt when situations break down rather than follow choreography.

Drawing on Kenpo theory, comparisons to boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and decades of martial arts and coaching experience, this book reframes familiar concepts such as checking, attribute development, and grafting as tools for managing uncertainty rather than achieving perfect execution.

This book is written for practitioners and instructors who feel a gap between what they train and what they expect would happen in real encounters. It is not a manual, a lineage argument, or a defense of Kenpo. It is an exploration of how martial systems prepare people to move intelligently when certainty disappears.

(from Mr. Mike Stone's Facebook page)

I am pleased to announce that I will be releasing another book at the end of this year. It is part of a four-book project I have been writing for the past 30 years.

The title is Nine Levels of Power, a work inspired by my lifelong love and passion for the martial arts. This book is more than a reflection on training—it is about the deeper journey of remembering my spiritual connection and creating a warrior lifestyle philosophy.

Over 40 years ago, I made the life-changing decision to move to the Philippines to rediscover my spiritual origins and to seek answers to the seven fundamental questions of my existence. Through this journey, I have learned to live in harmony with the three aspects of my humanity, to take full responsibility for my choices and their consequences, and to connect with Universal Intelligence. These lessons have taught me the power of living in the present moment, the importance of gratitude, and the strength that comes from speaking the truth with honesty and integrity.

Nine Levels of Power is divided into nine chapters, each representing a level of conscious awareness we must reach to live a life of love, peace, happiness, and joy. Within its pages, I share insights on:

Understanding Universal Intelligence

Creating a disciplined and powerful mindset

Embracing fear as a friend and teacher

Living fully in the present moment

Using the mind to attract people, opportunities, and experiences to shape my reality

And much more, drawn from the wisdom of martial arts and my own core values.

For years, I have shared these ideas rooted in martial arts philosophy—principles and values that extend far beyond the dojo. This book represents the culmination of that journey, and I am honored to share it with you.

Love and Light,

Mike Stone

The Medical Implications of Karate Blows by Brian Adams

How did your book “The Medical Implications Karate Blows“ become the first I.K.K.A. Black Belt thesis?

I’ll  give you a little back ground first .  After I opened my school in San Diego, I was often asked about the legendary“ Dim Mak “Poison Hand“ [ Delayed Death Touch ] lore from China that was circulating in the Martial Arts community. I started doing my own research project to find out if the stories were true. I enlisted several M.D.’s and specialist to help in the search for scientific verification of these stories. I borrowed a stack of medical texts about 5’ high to search through. Three years later I had found no evidence of any thing even related to the Chinese delayed death touch lore. However I could see how this lore could be imagined from Chinese acupuncture theory.

I finished the manuscript in 1967 and showed it to Ed Parker. Then he said how can we use this to promote the I.k.k.a. and I said you can say it was originally a thesis for Black Belt. So that’s when the Black Belt Thesis was born. He then wrote a very nice endorsement which is in the first pages of the book. The simple Kenpo Tech.’s were influenced by my studies at Bruce Lee’s in China Town L.A. [ economy of motion principal ]. After a ten year hiatus it is available again at Amazon.

(from Amazon.com)

This is a foundational Kenpo book first written as a Black Belt thesis for Ed Parker and the IKKA. Medical line drawings and technical descriptions make up 24 chapters, each chapter examining a core technique of the Kenpo art. Martial artists from any style can benefit as these basic strikes examine anatomical effects of blunt force trauma throughout the body, as well as surface injury to sensitive areas. This information provides realistic learning for students and emphasis the importance of control, discipline, precision, and helps to inform early treatment or first aid. This book is not intended to be used as a treatment or diagnostic tool in replacement of professional medical personnel. It is for academic and reference use only.

New book by Mr. Skip Hancock

(from Amazon)

This work is a proof that there is a universal Martial Arts system. The common thread to all Martial Arts is Form to Function. The core of the Martial Arts is: Attitude, Logic, Basics and Fitness. All Styles and Systems are simply ways to exercise these core ingredients. In this book Skip Hancock does two of the things that he does best. He clearly defines things and guides us on how to operate on Larger Generalized Principles.

This book is an invaluable resource, overflowing with useful information that I will reference countless times. As a martial arts instructor with nearly 54 years of experience (having started at the age of 4), I can confidently say that this is the most informative and practical book for martial arts enthusiasts.

However, its benefits extend far beyond martial arts. The principles and lessons seamlessly transfer to life in general, offering insights that can be applied to various aspects of everyday living. Whether you're a practitioner or simply looking to integrate martial arts wisdom into your daily life, this book is a must-read. - Shayne Simpson

Another amazing book by Professor of The Art Skip Hancock! Regardless of the martial arts system you train in The Path to Excellence: The Case for The Universal Martial Arts System will enhance it if you apply the knowledge contained within to your training regimen. This new book along with Skips two other books, Mastering Kenpo: The Path to Excellence and AWARE: Survival Stories to Help You Have a Safer Life are a must have in every Dojo’s and independent martial artists library. Thank you Skip! - David Chase

This is one of those books to ponder a path to mastery in the martial arts. Skip does a fantastic job at giving the reader an understanding of larger principles that can have profound impacts on my martial art as well as everything I do. For example, I study kenpo and I'm also a chiropractor. I'm finding that the principles in the book help my self defense while also providing my patients with valuable insights to prevent injuries. - Richard Tran

Professor Nick Cerio's - The Master's Text

Maybe one of kenpo's last "secret manuals". Or at least one of kenpo's "hardest to find a copy of" manuals.

Written in 1984, apparently this is an excellent manual where Professor Cerio put all his most advanced information. Problem is you just can't find a copy anywhere.  Searches on Ebay and Amazon come up with nothing, and no one seems to be reprinting the manual either.

(a review on Amazon)

This book is one of the most informative references out on kenpo from one of the most notable kenpo masters of all time, Professor Nick Cerio. For the most part this book focuses on the Nick Cerio's Kenpo system; including blocking drills, forms, weapon katas, and self-defense techniques. It also contains a section on the history of karate and kenpo. This book is well written and organized, and contains clear, precise photos of the techniques being shown. Nick Cerio put many years of his martial arts training and knowledge into this book. It's a MUST buy for any kenpo martial arts practitioner.

Kenpo: An Illustrated Instructor's Manual

 (from Amazon)

A translation of a 120 year-old (published in 1899) self-defense manual with 16 Kenpo (Jujutsu) techniques. It was intended to be a curriculum for police, military or anyone who wanted a form of self-defense. The 16 techniques were originally published in 1888 however, for this edition, the explanations have been dramatically expanded and new illustrations added. A great look at how Jujutsu was presented in Japan 120 years ago. History: In 1888 a Samurai named Hisatomi Tetsutaro consulted with numerous schools of Jujutsu and formulated a set of arresting techniques and titled his book "The Police Officer’s Essential Illustrated Guide : Kenpo." In this era Kenpo and Jujutsu (Jiu-jitsu) meant the same thing. This book was originally only available to police officers, however it was later released to the general public. This book, "Kenpo : An Illustrated Instructor’s Manual," by Inoguchi Matsunosuke expands on the techniques gathered by Hisatomi Tetsutaro and added new, clearer illustrations. In addition, this book includes several resuscitation techniques as well as Hojo, or rope restraining techniques. Kenpo : An Illustrated Instructor’s Manual offers a unique chance to see how early Jujutsu was practiced in Japan 120 years ago.
